Trees are awesome, and planting more trees in the Foster neighborhoods is super awesome. Did you know:
- The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.
- If you plant a tree today on the west side of your home, in 5 years your energy bills should be 3 percent less. In 15 years the savings will be nearly 12 percent.
- A number of studies have shown that real estate agents and home buyers assign between 10 and 23 percent of the value of a residence to the trees on the property.
Freinds of Trees, a Portland nonprofit, organizes neighborhood tree planting, and offers purchase of trees at reduced prices (city permits included).
Last month they planted in Mt. Scoot Arltea, Brentwood-Darlington and Woodstock neighborhoods. This weekend they’re doing the same in Lents and Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhoods.
It’s too late to purchase trees for this round of planting, but it’s not to late to go outside and get your hands dirty. Volunteers are needed to help with volunteers, dig holes, plant, and transport trees. Friends of Trees supplies the trees, all you need is to show up dressed for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.
