Before heading into your weekend events below, here’s the 1st Annual African Cultural Celebration “I am Afrika”, brought to you by the Madison SUN African Student Group.  Click on the slideshow for a look at an evening of food, a bazaar, poetry readings, music, and a fashion show!

Friday

Collages-001Pinball Wizards of Foster Road, the Rose City Showdown V tournament is going down at the Slingshot!  Qualifying will take place on Friday and Saturday, top 16 advance to the finals on Sunday.

It’s Colored Pencils Art and Cultural Night at Ron Russel Middle School (every last Friday, location varies).  Enjoy an international smorgasbord of food and entertainment including music and dance from Portugal, Somalia, West Africa, Himalayas, India and Bhutan, and India!

Steven Vaugn Kray, host of the drop shop on 89.1, spins super heavy funk at the Gemini Lounge.

macbethmilepost5Portland Rock-n-Filmfest is back with tropical night and special guests,  Foster’s very own 18-piece jazz orchestra big band, “The Bobwhite Big Band” playing its **first-ever public performance** with a 30-minute set that promises to turn up the heat and get the entire crowd off their feet.

Post5 Theatre inaugurates their new black box performance space with a fast paced and visceral production of Macbeth, opens this Friday and runs Friday-Sundays, 7 pm, through March 17th.

Saturday

Defense Arts Northwest invites you to join a freecalendar11 Muay Thai Kickboxing class (more info 503-779-9800).

The Ron Russel Middle School is hosting the City of Portland’s Fix-It Fair.  Learn simple ways to save money and connect with resources or Dennis 7 Dees will teach you how to prune like a pro.

Spend a relaxing afternoon at Bong Hit Bingo with National Green Friends, promising plenty of green for you OMMP cardholders.

Get an early start on your evening and take part in Mt. Scott Community Center’s 2nd annual Sock Hop.  Dress up in your 50′s finest for dancing and root beer floats.

Saturday Night

Take your hips on a journey to the sounds of Melao de Cuba, an eight person salsa band, who promises to fill the Bobwhite Theatre with traditional Cuban music.

Welcome back Cody Weather’s beautiful sound to Torta-landia or MJ12′s deep jazzy rock sound at the Gemini Lounge.

Celebrate with Lion’s Eye carnival style and wish them an amazing 4th anniversary!  Boozy root beer floats, carnival games, and a piñata, cotton candy and popcorn for your inner clown.

Sunday

Lend a helping hand and start your day at an Our Happy Block with coffee and a donated beverage from the Lion’s Eye afterwards for your efforts!

Enter on the Red carpet, dress as styling or campy as you like, imbibe on special cocktails and mocktails.  It’s Oscars Night at the Bobwhite Theatre!  Watch the Academy Awards projected on the wall of the theatre and be ready to deliver an acceptance speech if your ballot is chosen.

Kick back and enjoy the Headhunter Jam at The Lodge Bar & Grill with a deluxe bloody mary and Sunday comfort food. Sweet tidings all ’til Monday, enjoy!

A Lunar New Year Gallery and your Weekend Events

Before we head into your weekend happenings below, we’d like to take a moment to offer up a special thanks to the Holgate Library for hosting their annual Lunar New Year celebration.  If you missed it, just click on the slideshow!

Welcome the The Second Annual 2 day “Winter Blues” Music Festival to Foster Road’s Bobwhite Theatre featuring 13  blues, rock, and zydeco bands.  Food, drinks, doors at 3:30.

If just one blues band will do you, Gemini has Patrick Dull & the Bridgetown Blues in the house.

Maybe behind the mic is more your style?  Join the friendly crowd down at Dusty’s Karaoke every Friday night with an early 8pm start.

Or meet up with Capoeira Angola Palmares of FoPo who host many classes in the area, including a Friday class at Foster Fitness 7-8:45pm.  Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art and dance in which two players dance together in a circle, alternating attack and defense, in a fluid movement to traditional instruments and singing Portuguese lyrics.  Wow, who knew?  Add it your regular Foster Road Friday!

Do you dream of pocket parks, urban orchards, or alley gardens? If yes, you’ll definitely want to register for Southeast Uplift’s Sustainability Workshop: Greenspace & Working with the city.  You will hear how unique projects were accomplished from the urban innovators themselves!

If you’d like to learn more about this year’s FoPo Garden Tour taking place Saturday June 15th, garden host veterans will be at the Lily Day Cafe from 9:30-11:30 to answer questions and sign up volunteers.

Pageturners returns to the Holgate Library with the annual Everybody Reads community wide book discussion.  This year features Sherman Alexie’s short story collection Ten Little Indians.

It’s Chick Day at Birds & Bees Nursery, as if baby chicks aren’t enough, there will be free crafts and snacks too.  Or register for Miniature Gardens at Dennis 7 Dees and delight your backyard faeries.

lgabday Foster Art Night is back!  A brave group art loving enthusiasts engage in an epic journey down Foster every 3rd Saturday, taking in the creative inspirations and cocktails along the route.

This Saturday includes a Piano Bar Night at Torta-landia and Aaron McDonnell & The Gospel Plow at the Gemini Lounge.

The journey continues down Foster to the Eagle Eye Tavern to celebrate LGA Creative’s 7th birthday with Hello Lobster and dancing.

calendar2Ladies, start your day with rhythm at Women’s Drumming Circle at TaborSpace 9:30-12:30 pm.  The community is invited to the season’s first Leach Botanical Free Garden Tours, 11:00 am-12 pm and the grand opening celebration at The Dougy Center, 2-5pm.  Get crafty at the Holgate Library’s Valentine candle making class or learn how to grow your own wild bird food and register for Gardening for the Birds at Dennis’ 7 Dees.  N.W.I.P.A. with Ft. George Brewery are treating you to yet another beer tasting, keep ‘em coming!

Sunday

calendar1The Super Bowl will be done up right here in the hood!  Coasters is offering up a potluck, deep fried turkey and door prizes.  Torta-landia promises to bring out the big screen and tempt you with finger foods.  Carts on Foster and The Lodge will be showing the game too, as well as many more, so please add away in the comments!  Last, but definitely not least, you can join the The Portland Fighting Fillies, the all women Division 14 champion semiprofessional football team and Comedian Belinda Carroll at Super Bowl 2013: Men in Tights at the Bobwhite Theater!

A Busy Weekend Ahead on Foster Road

Saturday

It’s all about art in these parts as FAN packs it in again.  Start with coffee and breakfast at Carts on Foster and Pieper Cafe and then it’s a choose your own adventure between the Slingshot Lounge, Salon Mojo, The Crafty Underdog Shop, Torta-landia, Gemini Lounge, and the Foster Road Salon featuring art by Aaron R. Friedman.  While you’re in the heart of Foster, don’t miss the 10th and final grand finale of the Richard Foreman Festival at Performance Works NW.  Dancers, poets, theater and media artists promise to amuse and befuddle you with a marathon of short works created in just 10 days.  Advance purchase tickets are available for two seatings at 7:30 and 9:30 pm. Cider tasting, costume contests, and more…

Get an early start on your Halloween celebrations this Friday at Mt. Scott Community Center’s Halloween Carnival.  The evening promises a haunted house, crafts, facepainting, creative costume prizes, bounce houses, bingo, indoor park & family swim.  The carnival is from 6-8 p.m. and it’s $3 per person or 4 canned food goods per person. Or tap yourself into an IPA pint while listening to Crooked Toad over at N.W.I.P.A. or singing karaoke at Dusty’s Bar and Grill.
